Mike Dunn’s personal Tumblr from Orlando’s own Mike Dunn & The Kings of New England led me to this fascinating iPhone app called Polarize that turns any ordinary iPhone picture into an instant film picture. What makes this automated process fascinating though instead of just plain cool is the psychological effect the final product has on the viewer: the images immediately just look inexplicably better.
Why though? Well for $600, you can buy a semi-professional digital SLR camera with a fast shutter and image stabilized lens, or you can buy an iPhone that makes anything in low light pixelated and blurry. For $600, you expect somewhat decent pictures. For the price of an original Polaroid camera, you expect high contrast, dark borders, over-saturated colors. This iPhone app does just that - effectively adding class and vintage style to an otherwise inferior image without the instant touchups.
Oh yeah, Mike Dunn also makes great music - one of the only Petty/Springsteen-sounding bands honest about their influences and not overproduced into sounding like 90s Christian alternative radio.
